Part of the www.CaraVanMan.Ca project is my plan to build a unit that will provide immediate shelter for victims of fires and disasters that cause small families to be evacuated from their homes. As a news cameraman I am on the scene anyway so why not arrive on the scene in a vehicle that I can make available for folks who need immediate shelter. There are volunteer shelters and groups that provide emergency places to stay but often I've seen children and seniors waiting in City buses until arrangements are made. Then I can drive them to arranged accommodations. I also think that a quaint cozy little camper will help the victims realize that there are other possibilities to think about when they have lost everything. What better time to be introduced to minimalistic nomadic living?
My own experience when my studio burnt down in Peterborough, Ontario and left me out of business and homeless led me to live in a small boat for a summer while I got back on my feet. The event changed my life and how I look at my material belongings. At any given moment you can lose it all and I want to share my experience and point out the possibilities first hand.
One idea might be to actually donate the Caravan or let the displaced people use it for a year or so until they are able to rent or buy another place to live. Possibly I could hold fund raisers to raise money to build a trailer and rent a seasonal spot at a KOA campground or similar place. A small boat at a local marina might also be a possibility.
love the idea of a having a home drive up for the victims, frankly think it ought be incorporated with fire and rescue operations if called for just to take the folks off their feet, out of the rain or cold or what ever. . however, if cityes did it. . the added costs would be atrocious as usual
